Guide to Meat and Seafood

Beef -We carry Vintage Natural Beef. This beef is raised in a certified natural program without the use of hormones. If needed, antibiotics may be used for up to 300 days before processing. Currently, the FDA allows beef to be labeled "natural and antibiotic free" as long as antibiotic use is stopped for 180 days before processing.

We also carry Sommer's Organic Beef from Uruguay; a grass fed "completely" natural (never administered antibiotics or hormones), free-range beef that's low in fat and carries high quantities of omega-3 and omega-6 oils.

Pork -We carry Vande Rose Farms brand pork. The pork is completely natural (never administered antibiotics or hormones), and is raised under strict guidelines to include humane lodging. No preservatives or artificial colors are used when processing the pork.

Lamb -We carry Pure Lamb from Superior Farms. It's raised naturally in small herbs on family farms. Farms where there is no unnecessary use of chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics. From grazing lands to finishing fields, Superior Farms is dedicated to creating the best possible product from the purest places available.

Poultry -We carry both Rocky and Shelton Natural poultry. We also carry both Rosie chicken, an organic whole chicken, which is fed certified organic feed and Smart chicken, an air cooled bird. No hormones, antibiotics or growth promotants are ever administered to any of these poultry. These are all premium quality products.

Seafood - We carry a variety of seafood both ocean caught (Wild) and confinment raised (Farm Raised). We carry Wild whenever possible. All product signage states "Wild" or "Fram Raised". We can order our seafood six days a week to obtain the freshest fish possible. The orange roughy and scallops we carry are frozen because these items are available fresh only when they are dipped in preservatives such as phosphates or sulfites, which we want to avoid. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children need to be aware of the amount of tuna they consume, as the F.D.A. has noted that tuna may carry trace amounts of mercury. A notice containing this information is posted where our tuna is sold. We do not sell chilean seabass, swordfish or shark because of their endangered status.

Farmed Salmon -These fish are rarely given any sort of medication, but occasionally antibiotics (Aquaflor, Tribissen, and Oxytertracycline) are administered in the fish feed for short periods of time (5-14 days) to control outbreaks of disease. The government regulates and monitors farmed fish to ensure that the antibiotics are completely out of the fish before they are sent to market. These fish have a clearance requirement of 60 to 120 days of any and all medications. Canthaxin, a chemical compound naturally developed in wild salmon by eating algae, is given to farmed salmon to give them their pink color. The salmon we carry are fed canthaxin derived naturally from algae, instead of synthetic canthaxin.

Farmed Trout -These fish are rarely given any sort of medication, but occasionally Terramyacin (an antibiotic) may be administered. There is always a withdrawal period of at least 21 days before harvesting trout that received such treatment. Trout are raised in spring water cement ponds and the water is tested regularly. Feed consists of plant protein, corn, wheat, vitamins, and minerals. Trout is high in Omega-3 oils.

Farmed Catfish -These fish are rarely given any sort of medication, but occasionally Terramyacin (an antibiotic) may be administered. There is always a withdrawal period of at least 21 days before harvesting catfish that received such treatment. Catfish are raised in a quality-controlled environment of clay ponds with pure fresh water pumped from underground wells. Farmed catfish are fed high-protein food pellets. (Soybeans, corn, wheat, vitamins, and minerals).

Farmed Shrimp -We carry Garden Isle Shrimp. These shrimp are raised in naturally filtered seawater to ensure quality and are all-natural with no pollutants, pesticides, antibiotics or preservatives. The company states, "It is by far the most environmentally safe farmed raised shrimp on the planet." Ponds are cleaned between harvests and are free of disease and contamination. Feed is soy based.
